Portrait Modeling at Warehouse 521 in Nashville, TN

In January of 2020, I’ll be returning to Warehouse 521 in Nashville to teach Portrait Modeling from life. Students will work at full scale in water based clay on a wooden armature. Portrait Modeling is an effective introduction to my observational clay modeling method, and a great practice for the more advanced student as well. Teaching methods will include demonstration, brief lectures, and individual feedback.

Fall Classes at JHess Studios

Registration is open for the Fall set of classes at JHess Studios in San Francisco. I’ll be offering Portrait Sculpture on Tuesday evenings , and Gesture Sketch in Clay on Saturday afternoons. Both classes are suitable for all levels.

In Portrait Sculpture, we’ll work from life, honing observation skills. The portrait will be modeled in water-based clay at life scale. If you’re new to JHess Studios, this class is an excellent introduction to our clay modeling methods or as a continuing practice for experienced students. Each new model provides a unique challenge.

The Gesture Sketch in Clay class focuses on important concepts of gesture and proportion in studying the figure. We’ll work at an 18” scale on wire armatures, also studying from life. The pose will change every 2 weeks, for a total of 4 poses that we’ll study during the class. The concepts covered are useful for sculptors and 2D artists alike.

Weekly Classes at JHess Studios, Winter II Session: Portrait Sculpture

In Portrait Sculpture, students will create a life-size portrait study over the course of 9 weeks, working from life in small groups. The class teaches a specific method of observation: an organized approach to the very complex form of the human head. Clay and armature are provided, included in the tuition. Students will work in water-based clay on a wooden armature.

Weekly Classes at JHess Studios: Winter I Session

For the first time on TUESDAY evenings at JHess Studios, we'll be offering Long Pose Figure Modeling. Working from life, students will model the figure in plastiline clay on a wire armature at a 28 inch scale. The pose will be consistent throughout the 9 week class, giving students the opportunity study the standing pose in depth..  Registration is now open for this and our other classes. 

Armature and clay are included in tuition, modeling tools are available for use in class. Click here for more information or to register.

The Seated Figure at JHess Studios in San Francisco

This Summer, I'm pleased to offer a new workshop, which will debut at my home-base teaching location, JHess Studios, in downtown San Francisco. We'll be exploring the expressive possibilities of the seated figure in clay. We'll work at a 28" scale with plastiline on a flexible armature.
