This July I’ll be working with the Scottsdale Artists’ School to present a weekly class in Constructing the Figure from Imagination. I’ll be demonstrating the building blocks of the body and how to fit them together into a naturalistic figure. This process allows sculptors more freedom in selecting poses and builds confidence in our knowledge of the human form. Practicing a constructive method will improve one’s skills when working from life as well.

I will demo and narrate while students work along from home. Teaching methods will include brief lectures, demonstration and feedback for students who submit images of their work.

April 22-24, 2024 I’m excited to offer this very unique workshop at Warehouse 521. Students will explore drapery design and relief sculpture simultaneously. I’ll provide compositions to study from and students will interpret the subject matter in oil-based clay on a wooden board, creating a unique bas-relief sculpture that could then be cast (we will not cast the piece in class). Drapery is an important compositional element in representational sculpture; and moreover, practicing relief sculpture teaches the sculptor a great deal about clay modeling and sculptural design, I recommend this class enthusiastically to sculptors of all experience levels.

I’m excited to return to the Coppini Academy of Fine Arts in October of 2022, this time for a 4-day intensive workshop in figure modeling. The Coppini Academy is the actual studio of an historic Italian Sculptor who lived and worked in San Antonio in the early 20th c, creating monumental and more personal works with great success. Many examples of his work are on display in the studio and his monumental marble composition, “The Spirit of Sacrifice” can be seen at Alamo Plaza, though he installed pieces all around the United States and Mexico during his lifetime. Steeped in history, it’s a fascinating place to study and practice figure modeling.

Students will work from a live model at an 18” scale with oil based clay, on a wire armature. Teaching methods will include brief lectures, demonstrations, and individual feedback. I’ll be introducing my 3-stage model to explain the figure modeling process. The price includes tuition, model fee, and materials.
